Airplane on fire at SFO airport
A plane is burning on the runway at San Francisco International Airport while emergency personnel attempt to evacuate survivors. According to Heavy.com, the plane is a Boeing 777 Asiana flight that was coming in from Seoul, South Korea.
Witnesses are saying that the plane’s tail touched the runway as it attempted to land.
Raw Story will post more updates as information becomes available.
UPDATE: KTVU Channel 2 reported that the flight was carrying 290 passengers and that the plane’s tail section appeared to come off as the plane touched down. A witness told the TV station that at around 11:30 a.m. local time, the plane had extended its landing gear and was coming in to land when the tail section separated from the aircraft.
The plane reportedly began to wobble, then flipped on to its back, skidding to a halt with smoke pouring from the cabin. The Redwood City Fire Department is on the scene.
UPDATE: One passenger, David Eun, tweeted, “I just crash landed at SFO. Tail ripped off. Most everyone seems fine. I’m ok. Surreal” along with a photo of the burning aircraft.
